You prep the soil, plant the seeds, fight off bugs, and hope the weather doesn’t turn. And even then, you might lose your crop.

Survival food plants are different. Most come from tropical or subtropical climates, so they thrive in warm, wet conditions — just like I get here in the cool subtropics of Maleny. Once they’re established, they’re incredibly low-maintenance. Many are perennial (meaning they keep coming back year after year), and they’ll grow happily with very little water, fertiliser, or fuss.

You don’t need to be an expert gardener to succeed with these plants. In fact, the less you fuss over them, the better they do. Some people even say they thrive on neglect!

They’re packed with nutrition too — most have far more vitamins and minerals than supermarket vegetables. And most are delicious, versatile, and easy to use in everyday meals.

On this site, you’ll find:

Advice for beginners, even if you’ve never grown food before
What survival food plants are, and why they’re worth growing
Dozens of plant profiles with growing tips, cooking ideas, and medicinal uses

What are Survival food plants?

A short read explaining what they are and why they should be in everyone’s backyard – whether you’re a green thumb or not.

Plant descriptions

Dozens of plants identified with information on how to grow them, how to cook with them, and in many cases alternative uses in the garden and even the medicine cabinet.

Grow food the easy way — no green thumb required Learn about survival food plants and… Growing European vegetables in much of Australia is hard work – especially in warmer areas.
